Medicare Basics

What is Original Medicare?

Medicare Part A and Part B are referred to as Original Medicare.

Medicare Part A

This covers non-medical hospitals, skilled nursing facility care, nursing home care, hospice, and home health services. Part A will be sent to you automatically when turning 65. Typically, there is no cost for Part A.

Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B (medical insurance) covers doctors’ and other health care providers' services, outpatient care, durable medical equipment, home health care, and some preventive services. Monthly premiums are based on income.

Products

Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C)

A Medicare Advantage Plan, like an HMO or PPO, is another way to get your Medicare coverage. If you join a Medicare Advantage Plan, you still have Medicare. You’ll get your Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) and Medicare Part B (medical insurance) coverage from the Medicare Advantage Plan, not Original Medicare.

Medicare Advantage Plans, sometimes called Medicare Part C, are offered by private companies that Medicare approves. In all types of Medicare Advantage Plans, you’re covered for emergency and/or urgently needed services.

Medicare Advantage Plans may offer extra coverage, like vision, hearing, dental, and other health and wellness programs. Most include Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D). In addition to your Part B premium, you might pay a monthly premium for the Medicare Advantage Plan.

Medicare Advantage Plans are designed to keep individual out-of-pocket costs low, compared to Original Medicare, and may require an individual to utilize a network of doctors, hospitals, and suppliers. Monthly premiums are based on the carrier and availability in the service area.

Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)

Original Medicare pays for many, but not all, health care services and supplies. Medicare Supplement Insurance policies, sold by private companies, can help pay for some of the health care costs that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like co-payments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

Medicare Supplement Insurance policies are also called Medigap policies. Medigap plans are identified in most states by using the letters A to N. Plan types, premiums, and availability vary by carrier and service area.

Medicare Prescription Drug Plans (Part D)

Medicare offers prescription drug coverage to everyone with Medicare. To get Medicare prescription drug coverage, you must join a plan run by an insurance company or other private company approved by Medicare. Each plan can vary in cost and specific drugs covered. There are 2 ways to get Medicare prescription drug coverage:

  1. Medicare Prescription Drug Plans. These plans are sometimes called PDPs.
  2. Medicare Advantage Plans with prescription drug coverage are sometimes called MAPDs.
